Nanoscience/Nanotechnology
We are exploring the development of nanostructured therapeutic biomaterials.
Potential medical applications range from structural composites for bone repair to
drug delivery, cancer treatment, and biomedical imaging. Projects include the
development and medical applications of sterically stabilized and functionalized
inorganic nanoparticles, surface modification, and the use of self-assembling
molecules to form nanostructured 3-D assemblies.
In the nonmedical area, we are also developing biologically inspired nanocomposite
materials for aerospace applications. For example, we are developing new biomimetic
molecules to optimize the interface between inorganic reinforcing phases and organic
polymer matrices. For more information on the NASA-funded BIMat Center, see the
BIMat website.
